SPC flooring FAQs
What is SPC flooring?
SPC is the 4th generation upgrade from PVC, WPC, and LVT flooring. SPC, which stands for Stone Plastic Composite, was introduced in 2017 and is comprised of 5 layers:
- 2 layers of UV film protection
- Top wear layer: thin and completely transparent, provides resistance to scratches and stains
- Vinyl layer: durable and strong, this layer is printed with color, pattern, and texture
- Core layer: mechanically pressed natural limestone powder (calcium carbonate), polyvinyl chloride, and plastic stabilizers
- Base layer: EVA foam that aids in sound absorption and provides underfoot comfort
It is a floating floor, click-lock system –no glue is required.
Is SPC flooring waterproof or water-resistant?
It is waterproof...with limitations. Components of the flooring are waterproof. Normal everyday moisture-related issues like towels on the floor, small spills, and pet accidents will not affect the flooring or cause any damage. However, the flooring can be damaged by excessive moisture as a result of improper sub-floor preparation, flooding, appliance leaks, leaking pipes, excessive wet mopping, oil and gas spills, and water leakage through sliding glass doors. Refer to the manufacturer’s warranty for details.
What makes SPC flooring's rigid core special?
SPC's rigid core is made of mechanically pressed limestone powder, polyvinyl chloride, and stabilizers, making it extremely durable and stable. This core is what sets it apart as the 4th generation upgrade from traditional PVC, WPC, and LVT flooring.
What are the main benefits of SPC flooring?
SPC flooring offers multiple benefits: it's waterproof for daily use, scratch-resistant, suitable for bathrooms and kitchens, can be installed over existing floors, and features a click-lock system requiring no glue. Its UV protection layers and wear layer provide additional durability and stain resistance.
How long does SPC flooring typically last?
With proper maintenance and care, SPC flooring can last 20+ years. To maximize lifespan, use felt pads under furniture, keep pet nails trimmed, clean as recommended by the manufacturer, and protect from excessive moisture and direct sunlight.
What are the basic requirements for installing SPC flooring?
To install SPC flooring, ensure your subfloor is well-leveled, flat, smooth, dry, and free of dust and dirt. The flooring uses a floating floor click-lock system that doesn't require glue. It can be installed over existing floors as long as they're firmly installed and meet these conditions.
Can SPC flooring be used in the bathroom?
Because SPC is moisture-resistant it is perfect for the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room but is ideal for any room in your home.
Will my dog’s nails scratch SPC flooring?
Even though SPC has a scratch-resistant surface, no flooring is 100% scratch-proof. Keep your dog’s nails trimmed to help alleviate scratches. Felt furniture pads should be put under furniture legs. It’s a good idea to use a mat under rolling desk chairs
Can SPC flooring be installed outside?
Even though SPC is water-resistant, it is not suitable for outdoor use – UV rays, heat, sunlight, and sand can cause damage to the flooring over time.
Can SPC flooring be installed over existing floors?
Yes, as long as the condition of your existing floor or sub-floor is well leveled – flat and smooth, dry, free of dust and dirt, and firmly installed – not loose.
How do I clean my SPC floor?
- Use felt pads under chair and furniture legs and a mat under rolling desk chair to prevent scratching
- Place doormats at all entrances to prevent tracked in dirt, rocks, moisture, and other debris
- Do not use rubber-backed mats since they can stain the flooring over time
- Clean as recommended
Always refer to the manufacturer’s warranty and installation instructions.
